Vessels

For want of a better word, I gathered this collection of art under the heading, "Vessels". The grouping includes pieces which I felt didn't quite fit under one of the other five headings. The work kind of suggested its own category. In some instances, the piece may contain an element or two often found in one of the other categories -----for example, bowl, hollow form or platter. In general, the Vessels grouping consists of mostly open forms however, in some cases an ornamental element, i.e., a finial, has been added. Such elements are added only if and when I believe that doing so enhances the piece.

The majority of my turnings are created using wood from local trees growing right here, on Long Island's North Fork. A list of the species would include maple, cherry, walnut, Osage orange and occasionally, a fruitwood such as apple or pear. No matter the wood type, each is treated with the same attention given all woods which find their way to my studio.

Cherry Pot w/finial 'Homage' is, basically, a pot-like hollow form abstractly pays homage to the fruit this wood once bore. Turned from a marvelous cherry burl, great care was taken to retain the natural occlusions throughout to emphasize the wood’s energy. The delicate finial at top was turned from soft maple making it complementary to the cherry. Item Number: 1V   Price: $225.00 Natural Edge CherryLike the preceding piece, #2V is of cherry yet, obviously, it is 'different'. That is because one came from a Bing cherry tree, the other from a black cherry. Here, the fruit cherry’s beauty demanded an elegant, yet simple form. The attractive finish was achieved by soaking in oil the using a 3-step buffing method after it dried.

Lacey CocoboloThough of relatively simple design, this small vessel required considerable effort and time to create. An exotic wood, like Cocobolo, challenges the turner, especially when it has many occlusions, as this one did. The form and lovely wood make this small vessel one that is sure to stir big conversations. Item Number: 3V   Price: $250.00 Cherry Burl large 'Spheroid 12', a graceful formed vessel with large opening at top, can stand unadorned or be used for displaying dried flowers. Created from a handsome piece of cherry burl, it is filled with the swirling energy of its grain. This is exactly the configuration one expects to find in a burl.Item Number: 4V   Price: $300.00
