In simplest terms, the label Hollow Form describes a vessel which, after its outer form is turned to a pleasing shape, is painstakingly hollowed-out to create a thin-walled vessel. In my Hollow Forms, the vessel’s form determines, to a great degree, just what wall thickness should be. As a rule, my Hollow Forms range from 1/4" to 3/8” thick. For greater vessel stability, I prefer leaving the wall somewhat thicker as it nears the base. There are so many variables in wood that it is almost impossible to turn exact duplicates.
We usually have a number of Hollow Forms available in our gallery. For more information about Hollow Form vessels you can E-mail me at webmaster@harrywicks.com or, harrywix@yahoo.com. Should you prefer to visit our studio-gallery, please call or email and we will provide directions for getting here and date confirmation---so I am certain to be here on the day you would like to visit.

This form when hollowed out is usually referred to as a 'pot'. When creating such forms, the artist strives to create eye pleasing shape with a natural flow. Once the exterior form is achieved, the hollowing out can begin. This Pot is turned from Australian Yellow Box, a lovely-to-look at wood. Item Number: 1HF Price: $225.00 |
Because the wood this Pot was turned from had scant grain configuration, its outer surface was first textured, then ebonized. The ebony finish was rubbed to reveal some of the grain below and, finally, the pot was sealed with an oil-finish I mix from scratch. The luster was achieved by buffing with carnauba wax. Item Number: 2HF Price: $225.00 |
'Wounded Wood' required just the 'right' piece of cherry burl in order to achieve this form. Intent was to turn a pleasing shape while retaining the wood’s natural occlusions, bark and faults Basically, this is a hollow form with large opening at top. As are most of my hollow forms, this one was finished with oil followed by buffing and waxing. Item Number: 3HF Price: $295.00 |
'Maureen’s Favorite' was initially rough-turned, sealed and put in the barn to dry four years ago. In 2008 it was finish-turned to the shape you see here. This Hollow Form is a good example of uncovering the beauty in a chunk of wood filled with occlusions. On my wife’s first viewing of this piece, it became her favorite; hence its title. Item Number: 4HF Price: $325.00 |
